WALTON'S MUSIC FOR SCHOOLS COMPETITION
Now in its fifth year, the Walton's Music for Schools Competition is a national competition and celebration of music in Irish schools. Students Kelan Hughes and Tia Kenna, and the Fifth Year Music class composed and performed their own song, "The Fight for Freedom's Cost" for this competition.
They chose to address the theme "Why Music?" By saying that music expresses something unique about our history and identity and so chose to commemorate Edward Daly, after whom Bray Dart Station is named. In the 1916 Rising, Daly and the 1st Battalion were assigned to hold the Four Courts and the surrounding areas between the Liffey and North Brunswick Street. The 1st Battalion was involved in some of the most intense fighting in the Rising. Nevertheless, Daly held out until Pearse's surrender order reached him on the Saturday of Easter week. Daly was tried and executed by firing squad on Thursday 4th May 1916.
Daly's story is told in the song composed by the Fifth Years. Well done to the class who achieved a Highly Commended award against stiff competition. The group that performed the song comprised the following students: Kelan Hughes (guitar), Tia Kenna (solo voice and bass guitar), Jamie McKendry (guitar), Donna Kelly (drums), and singers Caitlin Treacy, Moesha Chong, Megan O' Daly and Nicole Coster. Congratulations to all the students involved and to their teacher, Ms O' Sullivan.

This year's Music and Culture Week, from January 22nd to 26th, had a full programme of musical, dance and art activities. Highlights of the week included performances by the Garda Band and a performance of a Bach cantata, which is part of the Leaving Cert music curriculum. This recital, featuring a group of professional singers and musicians, including past-pupil Ross Scanlon, was attended by senior music students from other local schools and was a tremendous success. Everyone was also wowed by an excellent art exhibition, featuring the work of current and past-pupils.
