LEAVING CERTIFICATE STUDENTS 2016

Congratulation to all the students who sat the Leaving Certificate or the Leaving Certificate Applied in June. Students and their families should celebrate individual achievements today. Avoid comparisons with others. This is your individual journey and you should enjoy it whatever route it takes.

Ms Fitzpatrick (Guidance Counsellor) will be in the school next Monday 22 August for any students who would like to discuss their CAO offers or have any queries regarding their choices.

*Wednesday September 2 is also the deadline for receipt of applications for Leaving Certificate rechecks. Applications must arrive at the State Examinations Commission (SEC) by this date. Students need to have returned the necessary forms to the school a couple of days earlier to ensure the forms are delivered on time to the SEC.

Early October:  Results of Leaving Certificate appeals released.

October 19- 5.15pm-Final CAO offers (based on results of appeals) are made and offers season ends.

WHAT IF I AM UNHAPPY WITH MY LEAVING CERTIFICATE RESULTS?

If you feel that the grade you received does not reflect your performance in your exam in June, you have a form in the envelope with your results to enable you to view your exam scripts on the weekend of 2/3 September. To view your scripts you return this form to your school by next Tuesday, August 23. Usually the student is accompanied by the teacher when he/she views the script. There is no charge for viewing the script or no limit to the number of scripts you can view.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I VIEW MY SCRIPTS?

If you feel that you have received an unfair grade you can go through the recheck procedure. You can request a recheck online or complete the appeal form available in the school. Don’t worry, your teacher will help you to do this. There is a €40 fee to recheck a Leaving Certificate subject and a €15.50 fee to recheck a Leaving Certificate Applied subject. Requests for rechecks must arrive at the State Examinations Commission by Wednesday September 7 . Students must thererfore return the appeals form to the school by Monday September 5 so that the principal can approve the appeal and send off the form. If a student receives an upgrade the fee is refunded.

IS IT WORTH MY WHILE TO APPLY FOR A RECHECK?

When the SEC sends out scripts to be remarked by teachers every September about 20% of such papers are upgraded.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I RECEIVE AN UPGRADED LEAVING CERTIFICATE RESULT?

The results of appeals are published in early-October and if you are one of the 20 per cent who appeal each year and are upgraded the revised Leaving Certificate result will be sent to the CAO and you will receive a revised offer if appropriate.

Given that more than half of the first semester will have passed by this stage, in most cases you will have; to defer taking up your place until 2016. You will need to discuss this with the college department to determine what is the best course of action for you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FAIL MATHS?

Some colleges run second chance Maths exams. Not all courses require students to pass Maths in order to gain entry.

Students can also check the CAO vacant place list for more options. Post Leaving Certificate courses require students to pass five subjects at Leaving Certificate level so this may also be an option. If you feel that you may not be accepted in your PLC course because you failed Maths you should contact the college and discuss this.

Second chance Maths exams.

  • DIT will hold a Maths competency test for applicants to its Level 8 (Honours) engineering programmes, which require a minimum grade of HC3 in maths. This three hour test will take place in DIT Aungier St on Wed August 24. DIT is also hosting tutorials next Monday and Tuesday. Applications for the test can be made at www.dit.ie/studyatdit/undergraduate/mathscompetencytest/

  • NUI Maynooth will host a two hour maths exam on Tuesday August 23 for students who wish to study for electronic engineering and who did not get the C3 in higher level maths.

  • I.T Carlow is holding an exam on Thursday August 25 for applicants who have applied for its  Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering who have not achieved the C3 higher Level Maths.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IF I HAVE NOT APPLIED FOR ANY COLLEGE COURSES?

If you have not applied for college it is still not too late.

  • CAO vacant places will appear on the CAO website next Tuesday 23 August. This will be updated regularly until all places have been filled, so check regularly. These places are available to those who are already in the CAO system but also to those who have not yet applied. For applicants already in the CAO system there is no charge to apply for vacant places. For applicants who have not previously made a CAO application there is a €40 fee.

  • Further Education/PLC courses may still be available. While many colleges have been filling places since January they will continue to consider applications until all courses have been filled. Interested applicants should contact colleges directly to see if places are available.
